So many ideas, so little time!

I really should just stop looking at clothes altogether! I saw this beauty on Miss Selfridge’s website today :

lace top

Ohhhh I want iiiiit. It’s £25 sodding pounds though, and I refuse to pay that much for that little fabric! I’ve been searching in vain for similar lace, and the one I liked the most was this on ebay :

dusky pink

It’s not quite the same… and I’m not sure if I’ll find jersey fabric the same colour, so I might do the ruffle in the same lace fabric? If I’m buying a metre, I may as well use it after all! I checked in my local fabric shop today, and lace was selling for about 14.95 euros a metre… which still ends up cheaper than the top itself, but there wasn’t really anything that took my fancy.

As for what I’d wear it with… I am certainly not comfortable with wearing it belly out, so I was thinking of making some sort of black shift dress to go underneath, fairly body-con… I have to figure that out, as well as how to make the actual pattern!

Any ideas or suggestions out there as to how I can achieve this top? I think I have a pattern in mind that could be adjusted, but I’m not sure as of yet.

As for current projects, my skirt is being sewed as I type… well, not really, because I’m typing, ha! Oh, how I wish for a sewing pixie to do these things for me… I did cut out the McCalls pattern last night :

Pun the bodice parts on Sally for tidiness’ sake! Looks pretty crap like that though eh? Can’t wait until it’s done, I hope it comes out well. Bit concerned about the sizing, but I measured myself and it should be correct! … aaand I just noticed my washing visible in the background hahaha

Exciting future projects!

Words cannot describe how excited I am right now!!

If you look over to the ‘I read…’ list on the right, you’ll see some blogs from my fellow assistants, but also some two from people in the sewing world whose blogs I’ve been following regularly.

First off is Gertie’s New Blog For Better Sewing. This lady has a seriously cool project going on involving vintage sewing. If you want to read the details head to this post where she explains all about it, very eloquently too might I add. Worth following, her projects are so classy, as is her personal style, her discussion of issues concerning us seamstresses and her general writing style!

When I saw her version of this pattern on her website, I thought it was to die for :

From the colour, to the shape, to the exposed zipper… I’m in love! I thought I’d have to wait until next payday to get the pattern, but no!! As luck would have it, I searched on http://www.sewingpatterns.com/ and it was there! IN DOWNLOAD FORM! Exciting stuff! I also have fabric I can use for this – it’s a bit of a longshot, but I bought some teal fabric from Ikea in the hope of creating a jacket, but have really gone off the  idea since. I was so excited to have found this online at any rate!

So I thought back to the other seamstress I have on my blogroll, Sew I Thought…, and a gorgeous knit dress that she posted a little while back :pattern2

Sorry for the teeny tiny picture, but check out Sew I Thought’s version here, her fabric choice is gorgeous.

I’ve been dying to find a pattern to make a cute woolen dress to wear this winter, and I just found it :) I adore this pattern, the sleeves are so cute. Lucky for me, this was also on Sewing Patterns, available as a download for only $2.99!

I just need to find the right fabric for this one – I found some wool in Galeria (department store here in Germany) which was nice but a little on the expensive side. Fabric here is a little more expensive, but I’ve found that the cut-offs are always great value for money, and after all, there’s always Ebay.

So those are my next two projects at any rate! I’m so excited to have found both these patterns for such good value for money, I was worried I’d have to fork out a lot to get them. Maybe the second won’t get done for a while mind, I’ve banned myself from buying anymore fabric until I’ve finished with the stuff I have! I’m finshing off a skirt from Weekend Designer at the moment, it’s a bit of a pain in the arse because I must have got my measurements all wrong when drawing up the pattern, but never mind eh!

It’s official : I’m an idiot

I swear, the past few days have been CLUMSY CENTRAL.

In no particular order:

  • 1. As I was leaving Beef for her Mitfahrgelegenheit to Mannheim, I turned around to tell her to send me a text when she got there and SMACK. Right into a pole in front of the Hauptbahnof.

2. Going to pick up Vic from said Hauptbahnhof, got on an U-Bahn, completely forgot to get off because I was daydreaming. No problem… except the damn U-Bahn terminated at the HBF… so there I was, the only person on the train, having to wait until it went back. How embarassing!

3. The piece de resistance with photographic evidence :

ALIM2796 I wish I could tell you that I did it while fighting off 500 ninjas and that this was the only scratch left on me, but oh no. At the Studienkompaktkurz in Duesseldorf, we were sat having a bit of hot chocolate. Ciaran made a funny face, so I was pissing myself, bent over to get my camera from my bag and BANG! Somehow, the corner of the table was a lot closer than anticipated… I’m such an idiot :P

I will update with non Lenbeingstupid material at some point I think, but you get to see my wonderful black eye for now… thankfully it’s easily covered with eyeshadow which will come in handy when I’m at the ballet tomorrow with my Betreuungslehrerin… I don’t want to have to explain how I did it auf Deutsch :P

Sally’s First Date

ALIM2276

ALIM2279

Finally! I finally finished it! It’s not perfect but I feel that I’ve done a fairly good job. I modifed the Coffee Date Dress pattern to have a low back, higher neckline and thinner straps. Sally’s chuffed to have a new dress named after her! She was very useful, I used her to see where the neckline needed to be lower, and to figure out how the back looked. I wish my camera hadn’t made the two pictures look completely different colour-wise!

I’m mostly happy that I FINALLY figured out how to do an all in one facing – I messed it up good and proper last time I tried it, but I think I’ve got it now! This turned out far better than my first try at the pattern – it never got posted, and for good reason! This is also the first time I did a zipper with interfacing, which made a world of difference. Unfortunately, the bodice is a teensy on the big side on both me and Sally, but the belt sorts that out!

The next project’s fabric is on the wall behind Sally, ha! It just happened to match so I used it. Pity my chair didn’t hold Sally upright – she looks like she’s had a bit too much to drink in the second picture. Check out the shoes I bought to match the dress!

ALIM2281Pretty snazzy huh? Happy days! I know it’s more of a Summer dress, but I’m awful tempted to wear it out in Frankfurt this weekend…

The Fun Theory

From : http://www.thefuntheory.com/

Can you make more people do something by making it fun to do? That’s what these guys are trying to do, starting with making more people take the stairs rather than the escalator at a Stockholm Underground station :

ALL U-BAHN STATIONS SHOULD HAVE PIANO STAIRS. FACT.

This pretty much made my day.

Language Barrier

Some days, I feel like my German is really really good, and other days I just despair at how little I’ve improved.

Heidelberg!

ALIM1687

What do you do when you see these steps going up to the Heidelberg Schloss?

ALIM1689

Run up them of course!

ALIM1690

WIN!

I think the view should say more than I could about Heidelberg – it’s a total fairytale.

Meet Sally!

I’m a bit poorly today, so had the day off school (which sucks, because my conversation classes have been going CRAZILY well, I’m so happy). Currently filling up my day with nothingness, so trying to be a bit productive by finally updating and getting some sewing done :)

ALIM2136

Oh the things you can pick up from a Flohmarkt (Flea market)… I spotted her and wanted her immediately – Meet Sally! She’s my sassy new mannequin, meaning I don’t have to do silly posing pictures in clothes I’ve made, hurrah!

She likes to think that she looks better in my clothes than I do, but I have to keep pointing out to her that done of my dresses zip up the whole way on her… so there Sally!

I must say though, even if she isn’t the same size, it’s nice to have something to be able to pin my clothes on and see if what I’m making is working out. All our full length mirrors are in the bathroom (on three wardrobes… which is a bit bizarre, because when you shower you always feel like someone’s watching you…) so it’s a bit of a pain in the arse to get changed and up and out of my little domain to the Badezimmer and then back and change back into my comfy pajamas… you see the problem. So that’s where Sally comes in. Am currently just finishing of a version of the Coffee Date Dress pattern from the BurdaStyle website, and she was helpful even if she didn’t like pins being stuck in her…

I’ll post soon once I’ve finished those projects :) back to being an illy billy now…
